National Mentoring Month is celebrating 14 years of spreading mentoring awareness in an effort to connect more of the nation's young people with quality mentors. President Barack Obama has joined the efforts of MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership (MENTOR), the Harvard School of Public Health and the Highland Street Foundation by declaring January 2015 National Mentoring Month through a presidential proclamation. In the last year, Horizons4Girls has made a difference for MANY of our young women. Horizons4Girls has taught over 1,200 hours of life skills that include skills such as cooking, family budgeting and sewing. Horizons students and mentors spent over 200 hours gardening. Horizons has tallied over 3,000 hours on social skills that include communications, healthy skills, anger management, and even leadership skills. Horizons mentors and tutors have spent over 1,800 hours helping students with study skills and homework assignments including a session with the LTC portable electronics classroom visiting them at FCC, and over 70 field trips. More than 40 job shadowing experiences gave students the opportunity for on the job experiences. Continue reading
