Horizons4Girls is excited to announce their first annual 5K to stop bullying on Saturday in September as part of the Sheboygan Squared Harvest Fest. This event will take place before the official start of the day's events on the Riverfront. Runners and walker can pick up their packet and t-shirt in the parking lot near Pier 17 between 7-8am. The route will go down Penn Avenue to Broughton Drive to Michigan Avenue, to 8th Street, South to Virginia Avenue and back to the Harvest Fest grounds on the Riverfront. Unique to this event is a school competition. The school raising the most funds per capita will receive a $200 grant to use as they wish to fight bullying.
According to The National Center for Education Statistics, nearly a third of all students aged 12-18 reported having been bullied in school. Pack bullying was more prominent in High Schools and characteristically lasted longer than bullying undertaken by individuals. Pack bullying maybe physical or emotional bullying and be perpetrated in person or in cyberspace. Different types of bullying are homophobic bullying, bullying students with disabilities, racist bullying and religious bullying. Victims display low self-esteem, difficulty trusting others, a lack of assertiveness, signs of aggression, difficulty controlling anger and isolation. Horizons4Girls wants to lead in this 5K walk to prevent & educate Sheboygan County in the awareness of bullying and the affects it has on pre-teens and teens. Challenging our local schools to help promote a NO TOLERANCE ATTITUDE, WHEN IT COMES TO BULLYING.
