Faith inspired me as I prepare for another day of Horizons4Girls. Her Facebook post for today? Faith of Faith's Family & Friends and Horizons4Girls knows it takes a whole village to raise a child & mentors are right there in the mix. Her quote today: "Each person has an ideal, a hope, a dream which represents the soul. We must give to it the warmth of love, the light of understanding and the essence of encouragement." ~ Colby Dorr Dam
How true is that? Our mentors develop long term relationships with our students giving freely of their time and talent. We are almost 5 years old and we care for our students like family. This past Saturday, 11 students, escorted by Faith, delivered over 70 dozen Christmas cookies room by room at Rocky Knoll Nursing Home. Completely dismissing whatever their personal turmoil might be, they spread holiday cheer with residents.
Does this make a difference? I think so. I had a vision many years ago that included girls being successful whatever challenges they might face. In 2017 five more students will graduate high school, making the total 9 students that have graduated. Is that a success? I think so! Based on our philosophy of long term commitment by students and mentors, as I looked at girls that have stayed active in the program a minimum of 1.5 years, the program has a graduation rate of 100%. Not bad, we are doing it right.
The most powerful indicator? Students come back and ask to talk, or maybe to see what they can do to help others. They become successful and freely share their story with other students. It all MAKES A DIFFERENCE! For more information about Horizons4Girls, visit their web site: www.Horizons4Girls, call 920-254-1584 or check out their Facebook page.
